Did it come into being by something else that came into being? Or was it ultimately brought into being by something that never began? 8. No God, No You: Consciousness and God’s Existence

“For centuries Eastern heart and intellect have been absorbed in the question; Does God exist? I propose to raise a new question; new, that is to say, for the East: Does man exist?” These words were once uttered by The Poet of the East Allama Iqbal. They imply that if we reject God, or even question His existence, it is tantamount to rejecting our own selves. The summary of the what you will learn as following: consciousness cannot be explained by materialism or any other competing worldview, and consciousness is best explained by theism, in other words the existence of God. The fact that we have irreducible (meaning, cannot be reduced to basic physical stuff) conscious experiences forces us to demand an explanation that satisfies the intellect. A range of questions require answers: How can a non-material thing like consciousness emerge from non-conscious matter? How can rearrangement of non-conscious physical things bring about an immaterial reality? How can subjective conscious states be explained by arguing that they are just rearrangements of matter? The only satisfactory and explanatory rich answer is to postulate that consciousness emerges from the physical world through the will of God. God’s will brings in to existence, and ensures, that there be a world of physical and non-physical objects, that are in relation to each other.

Some people cannot reconcile the amount of evil and suffering in the world with the existence of a Good all-Powerful God. The Islamic response to the problem of evil addresses this problem by dismantling its 3 assumptions: 1. God is just Good and all-Powerful. 2. God has given us no reason to why He has permitted evil and suffering. 3. Evil is objective.
